Portia Arthur donates 100 novels to Bokemi Academy

FINDING solution to societal problem is one good thing every citizen would love to hear in every country and that is what the Ghanaian author, Portia Arthur has done.

In her interest to inspire the new generation through reading, Portia Arthur has donated 100 copies of her maiden novel titled Against The Odds to the Bokemi Academy in Kokrobite as part of her Book Per Child project.

The donation, which happened on Friday, October 25, was as a result of promoting reading culture among pupils to grow and be knowledgeable for the betterment of the country.

In an interview, she sees the young generation shifting their attention to unnecessary things rather than focusing on their books.  Researching to find solutions to this, she realized that most basic schools like Bokemi Academy and Kokrobite M/A Primary are left in a deplorable state with lack of books in the libraries after they were handed over to the government.

"My Book Per Child project was birthed after I reported on the poor infrastructure at Bokemi Academy and Kokrobite M/A Primary. The pupils complained to me about the lack of books in their library and I therefore set out to do something about the situation.

“I’ve always been inspired to give back to the society and starting from my own community makes it even better." She said

According to her, the little donated should be managed for now which she hopes her gesture will develop a reading habit among the student in that community.

“As I donate these 100 books, I hope that my gesture will help to develop a reading culture among these students. I will also encourage every pupil to share the book with their friends after reading,” she added.

As the head of health and lifestyle desk at Pulse.com.gh, Portia wishes to raise enough funds to build a fully-stocked library in her community. Due to that, she calls on all authorities to join hands to take this project to a different level.

About her books and project

The 29-year-old Lady Portia Arthur is on a mission to cultivate a culture of reading among Ghanaian children, especially those living in deprived areas.

Last year she began the distribution of her books to some students and churches in a bid to instill the culture of reading.

The project is currently in its formative years, but the long-term goal is to help as many pupils nurture their writing skills.

Having studied Publishing at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Mrs. Arthur intends to continue using books and novels to inspire the next generation.

She is also looking to publish her second book by the end of this year – a novel which she says centres on love, family and religion.
