Aqweci Y-Zee in an exclusive interview with Hannie on PlayPluzz TV

PlayPluzz wholeheartedly received the Hiplife and Afropop recording artiste Aqweci Y-Zee, the Rap Scientist who shares his story about how he started music and the challenges he faced before making his first hit song dubbed 3nso meni

Aqweci Y-Zee of Straw City Music exploded onto the music scene in 2013 with his smash hit “3nso meni”. He went for a break to focus on his education after which he returned with “Bost my brain” in 2014 to Prove to us that he wasn't just a one-hit wonder.
Currently Y-Zee released this interesting track "Body Yaayi" which can be found almost on all the popular music sites we have in Ghana. Management is working hard to make this track a massive trend to appear on the music billboard.

In an exclusive interview with Hannie on PlayPluzz TV, this is how the chop-up went.

Q-1 Who is Aqweci Y-Zee the Rap Scientist?

* I base in Madina, am a rapper but don't like boxing myself. My full name is Jerry Arthur-Achery, am also a lab technologist by profession.

Q-2 Okay so how did you get the name Rap Scientist, is it from your profession?

* Yah, I did lab and logistic as a course in Accra Technical University, was Accra Polytechnic by then. So a friend of mine who loves my music just gave me the name rap scientist and I also feel its cool, that's a nice name, added it to my Aqweci Y-Zee and it's working.

Q-3 Wow! that's nice, how do you get your words for your lyrics, is it from everyday life or inspiration from people?

* Inspiration comes from everyday life, what I go through in life, what I see around and what people tell me.

Q-4 When did you start rapping?

* 10 years now, I started way back 2008 after I completed SHS.

Q-5 Do you do Gospel raps?

* People won't classify that as a gospel rap but I wouldn’t mention the name of God but you know gospel is the good news so if you listen to my rap and you take it as a good news then that is a gospel to you.

Q-6 What inspired and motivated you to start rapping?

* My friends, because most of them are rappers and I’m the only singer among them, so I got influenced by them and I found myself rapping. Yeah.

Q-7 Aside rapping, what other potentials do you have?

* I’m an instrumentalist; I sing, compose and write as well.

Q-8 Wow! That’s nice, so you are one of the multi talented guys right?

* Sure! The best in the game so far.

Q-9 In this industry, who do you look up to?

* It used to be Akon when I was a singer but I switched to Lil Wayne when I started rapping. For now I just observe and don’t look up to anyone.

Q-10 Why?

* At times you see people afar and you will be like Wow! But when you are getting closer you really see yourself to be doing better than them. I observe, pick a few things and there I go.

Q-11 How many songs do you have out now?

* I have 11 songs out now. I had a break in 2013 after I released the video of "3nso meni" which went viral. In 2014 I followed up with another video “Bost my brain” which featured Abladzo Kwame. Shout out to him. After that I dropped “Sweet thing” which was produced by Eddykay Beatz.  In 2015, I recorded a song with Kumi Guitar titled “Storm is over” but we couldn’t drop it that year so we dropped it 2016. In 2017 I dropped “This girl”.  I have a new one out now titled “Body Yaayi".

Q-12 How many videos do you have out now?

* I have a video on “3nso meni” and “Bost my brain” but with “This girl” and “Body Yaayi” I don’t have official video on them. I have plans to work on them soon.

Q-13 Tell us the people in the video, who shot the video and everything about the video “3nso meni”?

* The video was shot by Eye focus multimedia and was directed by Ben Gyau (Gazzy), they all  base in Madina.

Q-14 Do you have a management you work with?

* We have been struggling for management but it wasn’t coming so I sat down and I was like we can do this on our own, I have my own record label which is Straw City music. I have a team and in the team there are publishers, road manager, camera crew, PRO. What we need now is an executive producer.

Q-15 Have you been to shows?

* Yeah, I have been on big stages with topmost artistes like Edem, Article one, Wisa among others. I performed in Akuse club house, Golden Beach at Prampram among others.

Q-16 Have you won any award yet?

* No I haven’t because I haven’t submitted any of my work.

Q-17 What are you doing now aside rap music?

* I went to school, I did lab techs, fortunately I had a job right after national service but the work didn’t give me what I wanted so I quit and went into banking.

Q-18 Do you have challenges for combining music and banking?

* It has not been easy because I had a little bit of fame in 2013, I was big. Initially, it was hard and people couldn’t believe this sent me far but it reached a time that I needed money for myself so I went into banking. People were like Y-Zee, your level pass this job ooo. But I was like if I don’t do this where will I get the money to feed myself and to push my stuff, so I ignored them. I have friends who are equally doing music but where are they now? They are just in the house because they don’t have the money to push their things and they see me flying each and every day. I know when they have the money; they can equally do what I’m doing.

Q-19 You know the music industry is competitive. There is a whole lot of competitiveness, so what will you do to let your music stand unique among them?

* Yeah, anytime I go onstage I’m a different person all together. That’s one advantage I have over my peers and ability to speak more languages. I can speak about six languages. So I sing and rap in about 4 or 5 languages in a track. I play instruments as well. I speak English, Twi, Damgbe, Krobo, Fante and a little bit of Hausa.

Q-20 You said you have a new song out right?

* Yeah, "Body Yaayi".

Q-21 Okay, tell me more about it.

* Body Yaayi is an afropop song and I featured Joojo based in Tema.

Body Yaayi video shooting ongoing, this is from @NW.ME dancers from DC
