ROLLERCOASTER LOVE

By: Mercy Aba Blankson ( abaradical.com )

Love is a lot of things. It’s a wild and beautiful fire. Everyone has a word for it. My word for love is that love is a rollercoaster. Not the one from the 90’s but that of the 21st century sophisticated one.

BRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNG! An alarm clock clanged in the dim and silent room that Friday morning just as it always does every 5:00am. Then there was another continuous ring on the door, Tanya and Amanda as always were in a deep sleep. They always slept like dead bodies and woke up late. I happily woke up from between the two sleeping beautiful dead bodies, from the kings size bed and made my way to the door expecting to see my boyfriend Kingsley. Instead I was greeted by one short KFC food deliverer who had a croaky deep voice. I should have been at his mansion where I’d have woken up to a breakfast in bed; Kingsley’s own made hot cup of coffee accompanied by scrambled eggs and boiled chicken fillet waffled between two slices of toasted milk bread. Mouth watering isn’t it? The delivery boy asked me to sign for the food and then handed to me the hot package without using any soft, sweet, sugar coated words like Kingsley would have done. Well he is just the delivery boy working with etiquettes therefore I shouldn’t expect so much from him. You should have seen the sad and disappointed look on my face after I closed the door but it doesn’t mean I didn’t notice how much the KFC guy looked at a beautiful creation like me. Indeed black is beautiful and God knew what he was doing.

I left the food in the kitchen and started to clean the apartment which involved sweeping, mobbing, scrubbing, putting things mostly those of Tanya and Amanda into place and among other cleaning jobs. Shortly after that I took my beauty bath with my favourite products from Gandour Cosmetics paid by Kingsley off course. I settled down for the KFC breakfast and realised that it was French fries and chicken drumsticks in a bucket I always found to be ridiculous. Kingsley want’s to kill me. He can’t even remember a simple food order. Hmmm, how can he order such fatty foods and a frozen fuzzy drink for an early morning breakfast. I didn’t even have a bite. Soon the house help came in. I always loved to see her smile when I told her that I’m done with the cleaning and all she had to do was food, laundry and errands. Tanya and Amanda were awoken by the strong aroma of KFC breakfast and I wasn’t surprised that they didn’t even brush their teeth’s or even cared to pray before doing justice to the food. Those two were the worse glutton I’d ever seen yet their weight were always in a perfect check.

It was 8:00am by then and there was another knock on the door. “Come in, the door is not locked” I said as I Waited for Elsie the house help to prepare me breakfast. It was Afriyie the next door neighbor, he had come in to invite us to a birthday party of his room mate Striker at the beach. It was perfect, we had no lectures today and since Kingsley could not take us out and the other girls were dumped by their boyfriends not long ago it wasn’t going to be a boring Friday after all.

By 1:00 pm I was behind the wheels on our way to Laboma beach. It was such a fine afternoon and soon my mind began to wonder with so much pain in my heart. Kingsley and I had been dating for six months but I didn’t like how it was going. He is the business type and his company always betrayed him of spending quality time with me. When it comes to finances the guy is dope and that’s a good thing since “mmaa pe sokoo” but not all the time. Sometimes we needed attention too because a boyfriend who doesn’t give yiu attention, ah mtcheeewww na is that one too a boyfriend? I’m half Nigerian, my dad is a senator at Lagos state so money is not a problem at all for me. I just needed one who would give me attention. I am tired of seeing replicas of my dad, the business type who always devoted their time to their companies at the expense of their families and relationships. Within a month he had already cancelled six scheduled dates, three get-together with friends from both sides and missed 56 of my calls. I had not seen him in three days and I already felt like I can’t continue with him for long at this rate.
Seriously, I am fed up. I had to snap back from memory lane and fix my eyes on the road before something bad happens. With less traffic on the route I chose we made it to Laboma beach from Osu Ring Road jewel apartments within 30 minutes.

Soon Afriyie showed up and directed us to park at a spot he had purposely reserved for my white
RANGE ROVER . He even continued to show us where the party was going on. I must say that I was impressed with the organization of the party. It was so lit. The two party freaks Amanda and Tanya were soon seen eating and dancing. I don’t know. I’m still a little messed up with Kingsley’s behavior so i just took a drink and had a seat. Afriyie soon came around and engaged me in an interesting conversation till it was time to cut the cake and pop campaigns. I hadn’t had fun in a while so I guess dancing with Afriyie wasn’t a bad idea at all was it? I really enjoyed myself. He was such a gentleman. He even called to find out if we had arrived home safely. Kingsley had denied me all of these beauty Queen treatment that I had forgotten what it felt like to be wanted.

It didn’t end there with Afriyie after that fun party time. He engaged me in long midnight conversations and even when I couldn’t sleep he would come over and work his miracle till I went to bed. He helped me with class projects and a whole lot. We even began to go on casual dates together. I was feeling loved again and I was loosing it for Kingsley who was on a three months trip to South Africa. I didn’t want it to sound like I was cheating on him so i tried to keep a safe distance from Afrieyie but it was too late I was in love with him and love goes where love is, I couldn’t deny it anymore. Tanya and Amanda noticed it too. They advised that if he made me happy then why not because all the money I needed was being provided by my parents and getting love from someone who really cared wasn’t that bad at all. Soon I was sleeping over at his place and things led to other things and he proposed but I couldn’t accept it. It was then that I realised that I hadn’t officially broken up with Kingsley.

Afriyie didn’t take any offence though. It’s just that he loved me so much it hurt him to hear me not give him an answer. I had to break up with Kingsley which I did over the phone. It was sad and unfortunate because I know that he loved me too but I’m tired of only the “sokoo na mmaa pe formulae”. For him it now became a “obi gye wo girl a ne ya!
nso wogye obi girl a a ne dɛ
, Yei, obi agye obi girl” when he heard that I was now dating my next door neighbor. Afriyie gave me both, money which was unnecessary to me and also the attention I needed. We started dating after the breakup. He would tutor me himself with the courses I had issues with, save a seat for me in class, willingly help me with my projects and other school related activities. We went shopping together and even waited up at the saloon no matter how long it took me to get my hair fixed. Any time I slept over at his place I would wake up to the aroma of traditionally prepared Ghanaian dishes like plantain / yam and cocoyam leave stew with dried but salted tilapia with slices of avocado and boiled eggs on the side, or pounded fufu with Abunuabunu soup with some Grass cutter, or even Nigerian dishes like hot eba and bitter leave stew. He was such a good cook. He also did quite well with these romantic foot robs and back massages. Afriyie wasn’t bad at all but soon he got super busy at work and the whole love rollercoaster love started all over again, it moves up to amazing and then to not so great. Kingsley cried like a baby when I broke up with him because I was his first true love as he would always say. It was then that I understood that wogye obi girl a ne de and obi gye wo girl a ne ya.

Maybe you are like me, Sandra, you are not yet 20 years old but you already have 4 ex’s in the name of looking for Mr. Right or dating. I have come to the realisation that if you don’t allow God in your love life and allow him go before you then you will continue searching but never find the ideal man you want. So from now on I am going change. Before I even say a yes to a man’s proposal I am going to pray and ask God about it like any good Christian should. I’ll let God take the wheel because he knows the road that I need to take and when I’m in a relationship i am going to tell God to be at the center not sex and lust or money. It’s not the I like this or that type of guy or he is not doing this and that for me anymore. If you do that you would continue to change men like how frequent you change your panties. It’s about God’s plan for your life, don’t mess it up with looking for Mr. Right. Take your time my sister and allow Him to operate. God dey so more vim.
